It is deeply human to want the people we love to remain connected to the earth, and sometimes, to remain together.
For generations, families have scattered cremated remains in places that held meaning: a favorite lake, a beloved hiking trail, a family garden, or beneath a newly planted tree.
More recently, human composting, also known as natural organic reduction or Terramation, has given families another way to return a loved one to the earth.
But there is an important part of this conversation that is easy to overlook:
When it comes to soil, more is not always better.
Cremated remains are not soil
After cremation, most organic material is gone. What remains is primarily processed bone material containing concentrated minerals, including calcium and alkaline compounds.
That matters if cremated remains are being placed around living plants.
Putting a large concentration directly into the soil can change its chemistry, including its pH and nutrient availability. In some circumstances, that can make it harder for plants to thrive.
That does not mean cremated remains cannot become part of a living landscape. It means how they are incorporated matters.
Human composting creates something very different
Human composting transforms a body into a soil-like material rich in organic matter.
But the same basic principle of balance still applies.
Healthy soil is a living system. Adding too much of any nutrient-rich material in one place can affect the surrounding soil, including through nutrient accumulation or leaching.
The question, then, becomes more interesting:
What happens when these two forms of disposition come together?
Two different choices can become one story
Rather than placing a concentrated amount of cremated remains directly into the earth, the remains can be thoughtfully dispersed throughout a much larger volume of soil.
The soil provides a way to distribute the minerals rather than concentrating them in one location.
The result is not simply about putting more material into the ground. It is about creating balance.
And there is something meaningful about that.
Cremation and human composting do not need to be competing stories. A family does not have to erase an earlier choice in order to embrace a newer one.
They can become part of the same story.
Families make different choices at different times
Imagine a couple where one spouse chose cremation 20 years ago. Decades later, the surviving spouse chooses human composting.
Their children may now have an opportunity to bring them back together by incorporating the first spouse’s cremated remains into the soil created from the second.
Or imagine a person who has kept the cremated remains of beloved pets on the fireplace mantle for years. When that person later chooses human composting, the family may decide to reunite them.
Choices made years or even decades apart can become part of the same living memorial.
Returning together
That is one of the most interesting things about rethinking death care.
New approaches do not necessarily have to replace the traditions that came before them.
Sometimes they can connect them.
The ashes become part of the soil.
The soil becomes part of new growth.
People, pets, and families can be brought back together in a way that was not possible when those earlier decisions were made.
And something that once sat on a shelf can become connected to something living.
